The First Crumb: Why This Blog Exists

There are easier ways to bake bread than sourdough.
There are faster ways to make pastry.
And yet, here we are.
This blog is not about shortcuts or perfection. It’s about process. About learning to trust fermentation, time, intuition — and yourself.
My culinary journey didn’t begin with recipes written in stone. It began with curiosity, a slightly messy kitchen, and a growing awareness that baking could be more than food. It could be rhythm. Regulation. Nourishment on a level deeper than calories.
Sourdough, especially, changed the way I think about baking. The slow fermentation, the relationship with a living starter, the way dough responds to touch and temperature — it teaches patience in a world obsessed with speed. Pastry, on the other hand, taught me precision, structure, and respect for technique. Together, they shaped how I cook, teach, and live.
This blog is where I document that journey honestly.
You’ll find:
Sourdough recipes that are practical, forgiving, and grounded in real kitchens
Pastry techniques explained without intimidation
Reflections on baking as lifestyle medicine — how fermentation, routine, and hands-on work support the nervous system
Stories from teaching, learning, failing, and starting again
Some posts will be technical. Some will be personal. Some will simply be about a loaf that worked — or didn’t — and what it taught me.
If you’re here because you love bread, welcome. If you’re here because baking calms your nervous system, you belong here too.If you’ve ever felt that food could be more than fuel, you’re in exactly the right place.
This is the first crumb. The rest will unfold, one bake at a time.
Jx!
